Updated Social Distancing Rules - Club & Course Changes

golf distancing.jpg

Welcome Back!  Here are the new rules that will be enforced on the golf course itself.  Any members who choose to not abide by the rules will be suspended from Club Play.  Let's not sacrifice this opportunity.  Thank you!

Club Temporary Rules

Scoring - Each foursome will have a dedicated scorer. Take a picture of the completed scorecard and email or text it to the club Captain (Mccleerygolfclub@gmail.com) and all of the other players in your group for verification, at the end of your round.

Putting - No gimmies! Please observe social distancing while putting. If it makes more sense to putt out of turn, or putt continuously through to the hole before letting someone else take a turn, then do so. No penalty.

Flagstick - Temporary local rule prohibiting players from touching or removing the flagstick.

Bunkers - ALL unplayable areas (man-made - footprints, etc.) in bunkers are considered ground under repair. Players are allowed free relief but such relief is to be taken elsewhere within the bunker - no closer to the hole. Lift, and place the ball, nearest point of relief. Must obtain approval from at least one other player in the group to invoke this rule. (ie. plugged ball in a normal condition of the bunker would not apply)

KPs - We are still trying to figure out the best way to keep KP prizes part of the game, but cannot use KP markers. TBD

McCleery Golf course/Park Board Rules

Based on BC Ministry of Health requirements, staff have planned a series of comprehensive measures for golfers and staff to ensure safe play at both courses. Course marshals will ask anyone not complying to leave.

  • Golfers will be asked to arrive at the course no more than 20 minutes prior to tee off, and to remain in their vehicles (no congregating) until they are ready to play. They will be directed to leave immediately after completing their play.

  • A golf starter will be stationed outside the Golf Shop to direct guest entry, start groups off the first tee and to enforce physical distancing.

  • Only two patrons will be allowed in each Golf Shop at a time.

  • All bookings will be completed online, no walk-ups allowed.

  • Food and beverage services will remain closed and contactless pay will be required (debit and credit only, no cash.)

  • Golfers will tee off at 18 minute intervals (half as many tee times as normal) which will result in a maximum of 12 golfers teeing off per hour.

  • A single rider cart policy will be implemented with all carts being sanitized in a designated area between use.

  • All frequent touch points such as bunker rakes, garbage can lids, sand bottles, ball washers, and shoe blowers will be removed.

  • Physical distancing standing circles will be painted on the cart paths at every tee box area.

  • Pull carts will be cleaned and sanitized for every user. No rental clubs will be available.

  • Flag sticks will not be touched. Cup fillers will keep the ball from going to the bottom of the hole.

Campbell Trophy - results are in!

Well, the Ross/Gilbertson/Guenette/Mallen combo got a nice surprise when Mike Mallen had to back out of the Campbell Trophy this past weekend... and that surprise was their substitute, Ian Foreman!

Ian shot his BEST round ever - a tidy 78 (net 60), matching the gross score of his teammate Elgan, and only two shots back of Gilbertson (76). Sweet shootin', boys.

As a result, the Campbell Trophy was a bit of a landslide victory (16 shots) - with the other teams duking it out for 2nd/3rd, with only 1 point difference separating 2nd from 3rd, and 3rd from 4th, and 4th from 5th and 6th!! See the RESULTS page for the final numbers, including skins, deuces, KPs, etc.

What a great day in the sun, with a record number of deuces in one day (13), and 3 KP's that were within 2 feet!! The only thing missing was a hole-in-one. Nice shots on the par-3s were made by Thomas Montpellier on hole #13 (1'9"), Gord Kishkan on hole #7 (1'1") and Hung Teh on hole #5 (0'11")!!

Overall, it was a fun team event. Next up, Individual Stroke Play - Bangers n' Mash - next weekend (July 27/28). Then, a couple of weeks off before we tee up for the McCleery Club Championship!

McCleery Shootout, Stage II

Although the weather wasn’t all that good, the golf was better.

With an ‘alternating shot’ format, scores were destined to be higher than Stage I. But how high? Nobody could reliably predict. What showed up was a fun an interesting result. Neither of the Stage I leading teams could post a repeat performance of their Stage I heroics. Ferley and Breen scored 86 - with a couple double-bogeys and no birdies. Ahmoye and Foreman turned in a respectable 85 - but left us wondering what could have been if they didn’t score a 10 on hole #11?

Honorable mention to Ross and Gilbertson, who shot the only sub-80 round (79) to earn a tie for the lead with Mallen and Carpick (82) in the Gold flight - and to Matheson and Teh who are leaders in the clubhouse for the Silver flight, shooting 80 in alternate shot format - rather unbelievable with a team average handicap factor of 19+!

The final 5 Teams are locked and loaded now for the final stage, to see who comes out on top and takes the inaugural McCleery Shootout - Molsons Cup trophy! The final stage will be held on Oct. 5th/6th. Format: Better Ball.

Anniversary Tournament -- 60th year!

Hello again, McCleery Men!

And… a belated Happy Father’s Day to all our fathers in the group.

What a beautiful weekend to play golf! Conditions were fantastic for another individual stroke play battle, and the field was over-flowing, using one extra tee-time to fit everyone into the competition. Hard to believe it, but the Men’s Club at McCleery is turning 60 this year! We’re all aging like fine wine…

Once again, 3 flights of competition duked it out, matching players of similar playing ability for gross and net prizes. Results in detail can be found here.

NOTABLES: David Ng played to an 81 (net-63), beating his nearest competitor in the Silver flight (Rory Matheson) by 4 strokes. Graeme Conlon and Wade Ferley tied for low gross in the Gold flight with 80 (from the Blue tees), but by virtue of his higher handicap, Ferley also earned low net score (72) — giving them each an opportunity to share the top spots all alone in the Gold flight. Finally, Phil Tannahill rejoined us this weekend to take home the top prize in the Bronze flight (gross-87), with Alan Thom shooting an impressive net-65 to go home a champion in the net division.

Skins pots went to Graeme Conlon (gross) and Alan Thom (net). Each category had a total of 6 players with individual skins, combining both Saturday and Sunday.

Names to appear on the Bill Rochford Memorial Trophy for 2019:

Gold — Graeme Conlon (gross-80) and Wade Ferley (net-72)

Silver — David Ng (gross-81) and John Dawson (net-68)

Bronze — Phil Tannahill (gross-87) and Alan Thom (net-65)

Way to go, boys! Excellent form.

Best,

Christian.

Wayne Smiley Trophy - final results

Hey guys,

What a beautiful weekend to play golf!

The members were ready to battle it out for the first individual stroke play tournament in June. 3 flights. Blue tees looming. Flights were determined by handicap factors, and players were given the choice to play from default tees (Blue-Members-White), or drop down a tee box to make life just a little bit easier. Some did, some didn’t. Results from the tournament are posted on the Results page.

NOTABLES: Peter Young almost got his first hole-in-one on hole #13, leaving the ball only 10 inches from the cup (past the hole). Of course, he sunk the putt to share in the deuce pot (4 players) and claim the closest KP of the weekend! Who said higher handicappers never win the cash pots?!

Skins pots went to Elgan Ross (only gross par on hole #10) and Al Lemont (net eagle on hole #2). Both players were the winners of the draw (8 gross skins and 3 net skins). Congrats, guys!

Names to appear on the Wayne Smiley Trophy for 2019:

Gold — Mike Foxcroft

Silver — James Ahmoye

Bronze — John Yeung

Way to go, boys! Who is going to defend in 2020?

Best,

Christian.
