Campbell Trophy - results are in!

Happy summertime, McCleery Men!

With the warmer weather hitting the lower mainland, we’re having some summer fun on the golf course. This past weekend, we came together in groups of four to compete for the Campbell Trophy.

Congratulations to the teams who played on Monday — apparently there was something special in the water that day, because we have a clean sweep on the podium from those teams! See results below.

Special mention to team Brennen / Righton / Thom / Hathiramani — who not only scored the most points (127), but also dipped twice into the Deuce Pot, and took home the Skins prize as well!

All the extra prizes are listed below the team results.

Thanks to everyone for dropping by the patio after the round on Sunday, while keeping appropriate measures regarding social-distancing rules, etc. Stay safe, and have fun!

Next up: Bangers 'n’ Mash tournament, July 13th, and July 18th/19th weekend. Another full field participating in the event. Looking forward to the healthy competition!!

Cheers, Christian.

Molson's Cup - Stage 2 - Modified Alternate Shot

The McCleery Shootout, Stage II (second event to qualify for Molsons Cup Trophy) was played on June 29th (Monday), then on the July 4th-5th weekend. The weather forecast was iffy, so the Club Captain gave the players the option of lift. clean. place. in same fairways/fringe. Maybe that helped produce some of the low scores - but I like to think it was the skill of the players.

When playing ‘alternate shot’, both players really need to be on their game to score well. This makes the results particularly impressive this year, with SIX teams scoring in the 70’s (compared to 2019, when only ONE team shot less than 80)!

NOTABLES: Ty Gilbertson, throwing a dart at the 5th flag, leaving himself only 2’9” away and Elgan Ross making the putt. Result for this one hole: deuce pot win, closest KP win, and also random draw winner for Skins pot for GOLD flight! Big winner of the weekend!! Plus, he and Elgan won 1st place, GOLD flight, with a score of 73 (including a 2-stroke penalty on hole #1 for a lost ball). Is there an echo in here?? Go look at the McCleery Open scoring for similarities.

Other notables included kudos to yours truly (Christian Guenette) and Mike Mallen for scoring 3 birdies in their round on a way to a 1-stroke victory over the Ng/White team in the SILVER flight, who shot 2 deuces.

Also, congrats to our second place GOLD flight team — Barkwell/Dawson, who shot a 75.

McCleery Open - 2020

The McCleery Open results are posted below. With almost the entire Match Committee out of town on a tournament, the remaining members put on a good demonstration of golf!

NOTABLES: Bruce Righton, throwing a dart at the 16th flag, leaving himself only 2’9” away and making the putt. Result for this one hole: deuce pot win, closest KP win, and also random draw winner for Net Skins! Big winner of the weekend!! Plus, he finished 3rd place, Silver flight, net.

Big congrats to Kelly Baumbach, who drained his 2nd shot on hole #18 for an EAGLE, and ended up winning the Gross Skins pot for his efforts.

Other notables included kudos to Ian Foreman and Walter Brennen for tying for 1st place Low Gross, SILVER flight, and to Kah-Hua Yeo and Byron Stewart for tying for 1st place Low Net in the SILVER flight.

Also, congrats to our lowest gross score overall — Walt Vanderrijst, with a 76.

Match Committee would like to extend a ‘welcome back’ to Shaun Hemingway, who tied for 2nd place for Low Gross in the GOLD flight, and Basil Quan, who finished 1st place for Low Net in the GOLD flight as well. Great first tournament, boys!

We added a 3rd place prize for the Silver flight given the number of participants compared to Gold flight. Thanks to David Ng for his donation.

Anniversary Tournament - Bill Rocheford Trophy - Results!

The McCleery Men’s Club (MGC) is older than I am. Its inception is celebrated annually with the Anniversary tournament (Anniversay tournament for some of our regular members who were around for the 50th). This is a multi-flight, individual stroke-play tournament, and play welcomed the official start of summer. Don’t worry, the weather will catch up with the calendar soon…

Kudos to Jim Barkwell who played in the Monday groups, in pouring rain, and shot the best NET score overall for the Gold flight (70). Also, congrats to Paul Chu (new member) who shot his best score ever (76) from the Blue tees! Bruce Kennedy took all the younger players to school in the Silver flight, shooting low gross (83) - but since it was from the White tees, he had to take 1st place in the NET category only (poor guy). And, Hung Teh scored the low NET score overall (67) - plus, the closest KP overall on hole #3 (under 6 feet). Congrats, boys!

With the Match Committee away next weekend, we will be looking to other members of the club to keep everything in order for the McCleery Open. We have a full field, and another individual stroke play tournament - 2 flights, Gross and Net prizes. Honey pot will also apply for deuces, KPs, etc.

NOTE: We are getting full registrations every weekend - so take a moment to look ahead at the tournament schedule, and register early! Keep in mind that cancellations need to happen 5 days before the day of play to avoid late-cancellation penalties. Thanks for keeping an eye on the calendar for us.

Best, Christian & the Match Committee

NOTE: An error in the scoring was identified. Updated final Gross/Net results were delayed, but now posted below. Also, I made an error on the HoneyPot spreadsheet, leaving Doug Baird out of the extra prizes when in fact, he was still eligible. I’ve corrected the error. Please check your balance on the HP spreadsheet regularly/weekly, to ensure I’ve done all the math correctly. Thank you!

If you ever notice an error in the reporting, or have questions about scoring, please feel free to contact the Club Captain (Mr. Forgetful) - at mccleerygolfclub@gmail.com. Cheers!

NOTE: players in RED opted to play from a different tee box, thus qualifying for NET prizes only in their flight.

Tournament of Champions - Final Results

This was the ‘tournament within a tournament’ weekend, and the cream rose to the top!

Congratulations to Ty Gilbertson, who had top score in the points race (tied 39) and also low gross score of the weekend (74)! Kudos to Calvin Cheng and Connor Pettem (new members), plus Tony Dalton (past Champ) who also scored 39 points in the tournament. Since Calvin is a new member, and did not contribute to the honey pot, he only wins bragging rights this year… but next year, watch out!! Tony and Ty (2019 Champions) share the voucher prizes, and Connor (as a honey pot contributor) wins low gross in that prize pool.

Honourable mention goes to Mike Mallen, who won Low Net in the honey pot competition.

With our Deuce Pot carrying over from last week, the winners this week shared in the monster pot (see below). I showed 3 different guys who chose to stay out of the Deuce Pot, so the ones who took the prizes can thank them the next time they see them.

Best KP of the tournament was awarded to Don Hazleden, with a shot on hole #7 within 3 feet, 11 inches.

Looking forward to our next weekend (Anniversary tournament) — another chance to demonstrate your skills in stroke play, 3 flights, Gross and Net prizes. Good luck, boys!
