OK guys. There was some fine golf on this scorching hot weekend, but nobody shot scorching hot golf like Shaun Hemingway, who scored a GROSS 68 to win the Golf flight by 11 strokes! I’m just going to leave the comments at that. Sorry for anyone else who may have done something fantastic. That feat deserves the entire stage. Well done, Shaun!
Molson's Cup - Stage 3 - plus final trophy results
It promised to be a ‘down to the wire’ finish for the Molsons Cup, with only a couple of points separating 1st and 2nd place in the Gold flight, plus a tie entering the tournament for the Silver flight. In the end, the cream rose to the top, and Gilbertson/Ross took the Cup with Elgan Ross scoring 2 deuces on the front nine, and Ty Gilbertson scoring a couple of birdies on the back nine. For the Silver flight, Mallen/Guenette knew it was going to be a rough day when David Ng hit a gross birdie on the very first hole. It was 4-up for the Ng/White team after the first nine, and it looked like they were going to run away with it. However, some fine scoring by Mike Mallen (including a nice birdie on hole #12) brought their team to within 1 point with only 2 holes to play. Guenette’s abysmal drives and chips could not help his team on the next hole, and they lost the 17th by 2 points, ending up finishing 3 points behind overall. Congrats to the winners!
For the Stage 3 tournament (a tournament in and of itself), the winner of the Gold flight was Hazell/Geipel, with a net score of 63, and winners of the Silver flight were Lemont/Gordon with a net score of 62! Congrats to these teams, who were put together at the last minute. Well done, boys!
Here are the numbers, including deuce pot, skins and KP winners:
Rembering Larry Sloan & Gudmund Lindbjerg
We’ve recently become aware of the passing of two prominent members.
Larry Sloan may have been an original member and captained the club from 1967 to 1970, later serving as president, and in 1982 winning the club championship. He also won the championship at University Golf Club.
Gudmund Lindbjerg reigned as our champion from 1992 to 1995. Later playing out of Pitt Meadows, he became a leading figure in Zone 4 Senior events.
We celebrate their contributions, and send our thoughts to the families of both.
Seniors Championship 2020 - RESULTS
Good evening, gents. I’m just back from the Okanagan, and thought my first task should be to post the results from the Seniors Championship from last weekend. Here you go! Since I wasn’t around, I don’t have much in the way of notables… but look for yourself. A few guys hit great shots to get to the podium. Congrats guys!
PS. Young Guns results are posted at the very end. Players not in the Seniors who paid into the Honey Pot were entered in the prize pool for extra prizes. Thank you to David Ng for donating the prizes for the extra tournament within a tournament!
TROPHY WINNERS:
Ron Wootton (160) — Ernie Brown Trophy: Seniors Champion (age 55-64)
Jim Barkwell (163) — Max Bambury Trophy (age 65-69)
Anthony (Tony) Le Page (159) — Calderhead Heritage Trophy (age 70+)
Okay, maybe just one notable: that Tony Le Page shot the lowest score from ALL competitors - and he is in the oldest age category. Way to go, Tony!! Rumour has it that he shot less than his age on one of the days! Tony has been crowned McCleery Golf Club’s senior champion for 2020 and will be representing our club at the end-of-year tournament of Champions for clubs in BC!
Okay… one more. Kah-Hua Yeo finished 1st Net in the Silver flight, after experiencing a serious car accident only a couple weeks ago. You rock, Kah-Hua. Hope you’re feeling okay.
You got me… last one: Bruce Righton shot the lowest net score of any competitor (137). That’s a formidable task under the new handicap system!
Bangers 'n' Mash tournament results
The Bangers ‘n’ Mash results are posted below. Originally, this tournament was created to honor the British Open, but unfortunately the Covid-19 crisis took that tournament off the PGA schedule. Good thing we’ve done so well in BC!! Bangers ‘n’ Mash went on regardless.
NOTABLES: New member Tim VanOstrand hit a great shot on hole #13, leaving himself only 3’9” away and earning him a $10 Peak Golf voucher. Unfortunately, not in the Honey Pot fund left him out of the cash. John White had the second closest KP on hole #13 (7’8”) to take the prize.
Other notables included kudos to Shawn Hazell, who finished first Low Gross in the SILVER flight, with a personal best 77!
